The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) has opened an $80 million Aerospace Center, dedicated to advancing space robotics, sustainable aviation, and deep-tech research, following its announcement in April 2024.

Dubbed the Advanced Manufacturing and Aerospace Center, the building contains 29 state-of-the-art laboratories dedicated to advanced aerospace research, supported by funding from the Texas legislature and collaborations with NASA.

Further initiatives at the university, including an AI research institute, Regents’ Research Excellence Program, and the Tuition Remission Program, enable the university to focus its drive on innovation. For the aerospace industry, this includes supporting advances in spacecraft autonomy, edge computing, and defense-for-good applications. With UTEP’s research already leading the way, having completed several successful university research initiatives this year, these new advancements are expected to further strengthen its work.

“The next several years on campus will see the opening of our next beautiful, modern classroom building, restoration of the arroyo where the Liberal Arts building now stands, dozens of building improvements that have been deferred for too long, and revitalization of the Student Union because of the great leadership of our student body,” said Wilson. “We will also be adding more housing for the increasing number of students who want to live on campus — including those from other regions of Texas and beyond.”

Additional highlights in her speech include UTEP surpassing $40M in fundraising for the third consecutive year and exceeding $47M in support for their upcoming Mining Engineering program. With this, it appears that UTEP has positioned itself for a successful future for its students and researchers.
